This position reports to the Global Head of Finance, Development Functions, and is based in the US or in France.

The successful candidate will be the financial business partner to the Global Clinical Study Units, supporting their ongoing activities as well as their transformative activities.  The CSU leads the execution of clinical trials for Sanofi and works in 26 countries around the globe, covering approximately 225M€ spending per year and 710 HC plus an additional 700 externally sourced FTEs.

The CSU model is ever changing and in need of an enthusiastic financial business partner to support them on their journey.  This involves aligning activities to financial plans by understanding the business, monitoring progress, and challenging the status quo. It will be necessary to be an active participant on strategic projects with the primary external partner, project prospective outcomes and measure actual outcomes against those projections – course correcting where possible.

Job Summary

The CSU Global FBP is primarily responsible for the following activities:

  • Translate CSO guidance to coordinate and lead planning cycles including Budget, Forecast (Target setting, Rolling Forecast, Landing), and Strategic Plan.

  • Provide financial support to the CSU and visibility on variances related to financials and HC against plan.

  • Provide financial picture based on needs of business with a focus on insourcing, outsourcing, and meaningful partner specific reporting.

  • Support financial procedures by way of robust communication.

  • Collaboratively support optimization strategy and propose efficiency actions.

  • Support the ways of working as well as planning and variance analysis for insourcing and outsourcing activities, utilizing the capacity management and workload from financial perspective.

  • Manage global rebilling to GBUs, ensuring communication, understanding, and acceptance during budget and forecasting cycles. 

  • Create and maintain standard FTE cost calculations to apply to planning and analysis activities.

  • Actively participate in projects starting from the conception to support the design and execution, bringing Finance input.

  • Calculate prospective cost impacts related to projects and other activities, and advise on other options when necessary.

  • Measure and monitor actual cost efficiencies and follow as projects progress, suggest directional corrections as necessary.

  • Translate operational objectives into financial terms and scenarios.

  • Collaborate with other functional areas like Procurement to ensure optimal outcome for the organization.

  • Include savings within planning process / cost projections, ensuring business ownership and understanding.

  • Analyze monthly closing, prepare comments, and communicate to business.  Ensure actuals reporting is meaningful and resonates with business needs.  

  • Identify and raise awareness to risks and opportunities, challenge assumptions.

  • Make best use of systems (RDPM, BOOST etc.) to operate effectively.

  • Special projects on an ad hoc basis, such as R&D finance working groups, collaboration with other members of Development Finance, strategic Business Development projects.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • BS in Accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent, Masters/MBA preferred

  • At least 7 years of relevant finance experience

  • Analytical skills, with good command of MS office skills and the ability to perform detailed variance analyses and project costs reviews

  • Ability to translate operational actions into financial outcomes

  • Customer oriented behavior, willing to solve problems and reach out cross-functionally

  • Proactive, inquisitive, and autonomous mindset

  • Ability to work independently and comfortable taking decisions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Good understanding of R&D value chain and related costs

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: ability to interact with Senior Executives and strategic partners

  • Ability to build and maintain meaningful reports and/or dashboards to be presented to the organization

  • Willingness to learn and develop a critical view on research and development activities in terms of planning and costs and efficiencies
